What psychosomatics says

With our hands we make, hold, hug and give. In psychosomatics, hands are linked to the feeling “I’m coping” or “I can’t get anything right.” The finger joints often respond when you’ve spent years doubting whether you’re doing everything right and trying to please everyone.

The shoulders are linked to guilt. “I’m a bad mom,” “I’m a bad wife,” blaming yourself for things you said in a fight. You carry it and don’t let yourself put it down.

Numb hands often come when you’ve put up with unfairness or overload for a long time and can’t change anything. Or when you can’t hold on to something precious: a person, money, your place. Psychosomatics helps you see what you’re holding so tightly and what it’s time to let go of.

Quick check: what may be behind it

  1. Where are you most afraid of doing something wrong?

  2. What do you blame yourself for as a mom or as a wife?

  3. What are you holding on to with the last of your strength, even though you’ve long wanted to let go?

What it is

One of the most common causes of numbness is carpal tunnel syndrome. There’s a narrow tunnel in the wrist that a nerve runs through on its way to the fingers. When the tissue there swells, the nerve gets squeezed: the thumb, index and middle fingers go numb and tingle, often at night, and your grip gets weaker. According to the Russian Ministry of Health clinical guidelines (2025), it affects 1–5% of people, and women 3–6 times more often than men. It’s triggered by repetitive hand movements and vibration, and also by pregnancy, hypothyroidism and diabetes.

Pain and thickening in the finger joints most often come from osteoarthritis. It usually starts after 40: hard nodules appear on the joints, the fingers hurt when you move them, and they’re stiff in the morning, but for less than half an hour. According to the Russian Ministry of Health clinical guidelines (2025), women are more prone to it, especially after menopause. The protocol of the Ministry of Health of Kazakhstan also names a lack of estrogen after menopause among the causes.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a different, inflammatory disease. According to the Russian Ministry of Health clinical guidelines (2024), it affects 0.5–2% of adults worldwide, women 3 times more often than men, and it most often starts at age 40–55. The small joints of the hands swell, it’s hard to make a fist, and morning stiffness lasts from half an hour to an hour or longer.

Long-lasting shoulder pain can come from “frozen shoulder”: the joint gets tight, and the pain is worse at night. According to the UK’s National Health Service (NHS), it’s more common with diabetes and can take months or even years to go away. Shaky hands can come from stress, tiredness, anxiety, coffee and cold, and also from some medicines and illnesses.

How it shows up

Sudden weakness or numbness in one arm, especially with a drooping face or muddled speech, can be a stroke. Call an ambulance (103 in Kazakhstan) right away, even if it has passed.

Numbness and weakness are checked by a neurologist, joints by a rheumatologist, the shoulder by an orthopedic specialist. You can start with a general practitioner or family doctor.

Frequently asked questions

Why do my hands go numb at night?

Most often it’s carpal tunnel syndrome: a nerve that runs to the fingers gets squeezed in the wrist. It happens with pregnancy, hypothyroidism, diabetes and repetitive hand work. A neurologist checks the cause. Psychosomatics looks alongside: what overload or unfairness you’ve been putting up with for a long time.

Can stress cause hand and arm pain?

A doctor checks pain in the hands and shoulders first: the joints, the nerves, the neck. Many women notice the pain started or got worse during a hard time. Psychosomatics looks at what was going on then: guilt, fear of not coping, the need to hold everything on your own.

What do hands mean in psychosomatics?

Hands are linked to how you cope with things and hold on to what matters. Fingers, to the doubt “am I doing this right,” shoulders, to guilt toward your children or partner. It’s not a diagnosis, it’s a hint about where to look.
