What it is

The fallopian tubes connect the ovaries to the uterus, and the egg travels through them into the uterus. Inflammation of the tubes is called salpingitis, and if the ovary is involved too, it's adnexitis.

It's most often caused by bacteria, including sexually transmitted infections such as chlamydia and gonorrhea. Sometimes the inflammation starts after childbirth, an abortion or getting an IUD. The most serious complication is a pus-filled abscess of the tube and ovary.

According to the Russian Ministry of Health clinical guidelines (2024), pelvic inflammatory disease is one of the most common reasons women are admitted to the hospital. It's most common at ages 17–28.

It's important to finish the full course of treatment for adnexitis. Chronic inflammation leaves adhesions that can cause ectopic pregnancy and infertility. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in eight women who have had this inflammation later have trouble getting pregnant.
