How do I silence the inner critic that scolds me for everything?
You cannot switch the inner critic off, but you can stop obeying it. Notice what exactly it said and ask yourself: whose voice is this and what is it afraid of. Often the critic is “protecting” you from a mistake or from judgment. Replace the reproach with the question “what would help me right now?” and take one small step.
Where it comes from
The inner critic usually speaks in other people’s words: parents, teachers, former bosses. We learned their judgments and started repeating them ourselves, even when nobody is around.
It has a “good” purpose: to keep you from making mistakes and being embarrassed. The method is poor, though. Reproach takes energy and leaves less for action.
What you can do today
- Catch the phrase. Write down word for word what it said: “you ruined everything again”. On paper it sounds like someone else’s line.
- Ask: “Whose voice is this?” If you hear your mother, a teacher or a former boss, you have already separated it from yourself.
- Ask: “What is it afraid of?” The answer is usually the same: judgment, a mistake, failure. Say that fear out loud.
- Tell yourself what you would tell a friend in the same situation. You would not tell your friend “you are good for nothing”.
- Replace the reproach with a question: “What would help me right now?” and do the smallest action from the answer.
When to be careful
If the voice is very harsh, you feel worthless, your mood does not lift for a long time, and your sleep and appetite are disturbed, see a clinical psychologist or a doctor in person. That is not weakness, it is taking care of yourself.
Where the Ladder fits in
In the Ladder method the critic stands on the diagram among the obstacles between you and your goal, and its words are what stops you from taking a step. The diagnostic helps you see which phrases hold you and where they came from. It takes 10 minutes from your phone, free, no sign-up.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the critic loudest when I start something new?
Something new is a risk, and it tries to protect you from risk. How loud it is does not mean it is right. It means this matters to you.
Maybe the critic is just telling the truth?
The truth is specific: “there are two mistakes in the report, fix them”. The critic generalizes: “you always ruin everything”. The specific helps, the general only hurts.
How fast will it go quiet?
It does not disappear completely, but with practice it gets quieter and you notice it sooner. Usually it takes weeks, not one evening.
