Why do I scold myself for being lazy and still do nothing?
Scolding does not start action, it takes strength: afterwards you are left with shame and heaviness, and getting down to the task is even harder. Behind “laziness” there is more often tiredness, fear of making a mistake or a task that is not really yours. What helps is not being strict with yourself but asking “what is in my way” and taking a five-minute step; if listlessness lasts for weeks, start with a doctor.
Why self-reproach does not work
It becomes a circle: I postpone, I scold myself, I feel ashamed, I have less strength, I postpone again. Scolding gives a short feeling of “I am being strict with myself”, but it does not bring you closer to the task.
The voice that scolds is often not yours. Once adults said it: “lazy”, “hopeless”. Now it sounds in your voice.
What can stand behind “laziness”
- Tiredness and lack of sleep.
- Fear of a mistake or of someone’s judgement.
- The task is not yours: it is someone else’s goal that you took on.
- The task is too big and it is unclear where to begin.
- Rest comes with guilt, so it does not restore you.
How to leave the circle
- Write down the exact phrase you scold yourself with. Next to it note whose voice it is.
- Instead of “what is wrong with me”, ask “what is in my way with this particular task”.
- Take a five-minute step: one email, one call, one paragraph.
- Plan rest in advance so that it comes without guilt.
- In the evening, note what you did, not what you did not.
When it is better to see a doctor
If listlessness, loss of interest, and changes in sleep and appetite last for weeks, see a doctor: anaemia, thyroid problems and depression can all look like this. The diagnosis is made by a doctor, and it is not your fault.
The Ladder does not replace a doctor. It shows on a diagram what stands between you and your goal. The free diagnostic takes 10 minutes from your phone.
Psychological work goes alongside treatment, not instead of it. Diagnosis is made by a doctor.
Frequently asked questions
How is laziness different from tiredness?
Tiredness passes after rest and the strength comes back. If you have rested and still do not want to act, the reason may be fear or someone else’s goal. If strength does not return for weeks, see a doctor.
Why do I feel worse when I scold myself?
Reproach increases shame and anxiety, and they take strength. What helps you move is not strictness but understanding and a small step.
Could this be depression?
It could, but only a doctor can tell. If interest and strength have been missing for several weeks and sleep and appetite are disturbed, do not put off the visit.
