How can I raise my self-esteem if I criticise myself all the time?

In short

Self-esteem is not raised by affirmations like “I am good”: inside they sound untrue and fade fast. What works is finding whose words you repeat about yourself and writing down, every day, the specific things that went well. The critic in your head is most often someone else’s voice that you once took for your own.

Where the strict inner critic comes from

Children do not invent bad things about themselves. They repeat what they heard: “you are the eldest”, “wrong again”, “the neighbour’s daughter does it right”. Over time the phrase stops sounding foreign and becomes “this is who I am”.

That is why arguing with the critic head-on is pointless. First you need to see where the phrase came from.

What to do instead of “love yourself”

Why it does not work the first time

The critic is used to being in charge and will get louder at first. That is normal: it protects you from old judgements. After a couple of weeks of notes it becomes visible that there are more facts on your side than it seemed.

In the Ladder method such phrases show up as obstacles between you and your goal. The free diagnostic, 10 minutes from your phone with no sign-up, shows which words hold you back the most.

Frequently asked questions

Is this low self-esteem or just modesty?

Modesty does not stop you from acting. If because of the critic you do not send an application, name your price or ask for help, that is a brake, and it is worth looking into.

Do affirmations help?

Rarely. A phrase you do not believe starts an inner argument. Notes of real things you did work better: you do not have to believe them, they already happened.

When do I need a specialist?

If the criticism comes with long-lasting low mood, anxiety or thoughts that life is not worth living, see a doctor or a clinical psychologist. Working on your own does not replace treatment.
