Why do I want something and fear it at the same time, and can’t decide?
When you want something and are scared at the same time, it usually means the goal matters to you. Do not wait for the fear to go away: write down separately what you want and what you fear, then pick the smallest step you can take back. Fear shrinks from action, not from thinking.
Why this happens
Desire and fear are not enemies. Usually they are two kinds of care from one you: one wants growth, the other wants safety. While they argue, you stand still and spend energy.
The more important the goal, the louder the fear. If you did not care, you would not hesitate.
What you can do today
- Take a sheet and split it in two: “What I want” and “What I fear”. Be specific, one sentence per item.
- Next to each fear ask: what will actually happen if this comes true, and will I get through it?
- Pick a 15 minute step that can be undone: write one email, ask one question, go to one meeting.
- Put a date for that step in your calendar. Until it is in the calendar, it stays a thought.
- After the step, write down what actually happened. Compare it with what you expected.
When to be careful
If the fear is so strong that you have panic attacks, a racing heart or insomnia and cannot do ordinary things, see a doctor or a specialist in person. That is not weakness, it is taking care of yourself.
Where the Ladder fits in
In the Ladder method fears stand above the goal and obstacles stand between you and it. The diagnostic helps lay out “I want” and “I’m afraid” on the diagram and see which fear holds you most and where to start. It takes 10 minutes from your phone, free, no sign-up.
Frequently asked questions
How do I tell fear from intuition?
Fear speaks in general words and rushes you: “it will be awful, don’t”. Intuition is calmer and more specific. Test the fear with a small step you can undo.
Do I have to stop being afraid first?
No. Courage is acting together with fear. It shrinks when you are already moving and see what really happens.
What if I take a step and make a mistake?
Then you learn something about yourself and the task, and a small step can be corrected. Standing still for years is scarier.
