Why am I afraid to reach a goal I truly want?
Usually what scares you isn’t the movement itself, but what comes after the goal: different relationships, new responsibility, envy or judgment from people close to you. This fear quietly slows every step, even though you sincerely want the result. In the Ladder method these fears sit above the goal, and as long as you can’t see them, they’re in charge.
What this fear looks like
You’re almost there, and suddenly you get sick, have a fight, forget an important deadline. Or the goal is always “almost” but never “done”. That’s often how fear of what comes next works.
- “If I earn a lot, my husband will feel worse about himself.”
- “If I lose weight, people will start looking at me, and I’m not ready for that.”
- “If I start my own business and fail, Mum will say: I told you so.”
Why it’s not a whim
The psyche protects what you already have: relationships, a familiar role, your place in the family. A goal threatens that, and fear kicks in before you even notice it.
How to see your own
Finish the sentence: “When I reach my goal, the bad thing will be that…”. The first thing that comes to mind is your step above the goal.
The free Ladder diagnostic asks separately about fears after the goal and shows them on the map along with everything else.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the same as impostor syndrome?
Similar, but not the same. Impostor syndrome is the fear of being found out right now. Fear after the goal is about what will change in your life once the goal happens.
