How do I stop being afraid of making mistakes and start acting?

In short

The fear of mistakes is almost always about other people’s judgment: once a mistake was followed by shame, mockery or coldness from people close to you, and now your mind protects you from a repeat. You can’t stop being afraid by ordering yourself to. What helps is finding whose words you hear before you act, and making the step so small that a mistake costs little. On the Ladder map those words show up as an obstacle between you and your goal.

Where the fear of mistakes comes from

A small child isn’t afraid of making mistakes: they fall and get up. Fear appears when a mistake is followed by a reaction: “you failed again,” laughter in class, your mother’s silence, a comparison with your sister. What you remember isn’t the mistake itself but what came after it.

In adult life your mind recognizes the familiar picture and switches on protection before you’ve had time to decide: “don’t start, or it will be like last time.” From the outside it looks like perfectionism or procrastination, from the inside like “I’m not ready yet.”

How to find your phrase

Think of something you’re afraid to approach. Imagine doing it with a mistake and answer in writing:

What to do today

Once you’ve named the phrase, it loses some of its power: these are one person’s words on one particular day, not a verdict on you.

Then take a step smaller than seems necessary: send the first paragraph instead of the whole text, record a video and don’t post it, show a sketch to one person. The fear of mistakes weakens not through persuasion but through the experience that a mistake doesn’t wreck your life.

How this works in the Ladder method

On the map, the goal is at the top, you stand on your own step, and between you are obstacles: people and their phrases. The fear of mistakes usually looks exactly like someone’s phrase in that place. Below you can see the past that pulls you back, and above the goal, the fears of what comes after.

Frequently asked questions

Is this perfectionism?

It’s similar. Perfectionism often grows out of this kind of fear: until it’s perfect, I won’t show it. But the name changes nothing. What changes things is the answer to the question of whose phrase stands behind it.

What if I really can’t afford mistakes, for example at work?

The price of a mistake differs between tasks. Where it’s high, check and double-check. Where it’s low, let yourself try: fear inflates the price.

When should I show the fear of mistakes to a doctor?

If anxiety keeps you awake, gets in the way of work and life, or you have panic attacks with a racing heart and shortness of breath, see a doctor, a psychiatrist or a psychotherapist. The Ladder method goes alongside treatment, not instead of it.

See what is holding you back.
