What psychosomatics says

In psychosomatics, blood is linked to joy and life force. Heavy periods are described as a feeling that life is draining out of you and your strength is going to other people.

Often there's exhaustion from giving behind it: you're always helping someone, rescuing someone, but never refilling yourself.

Another theme is motherhood: a wish for a child that isn't coming true, or a fear of pregnancy. Psychosomatics helps you see where your strength is draining away.

Quick check: what may be behind it

  1. Who do you spend most of your energy on?

  2. What fills you up instead of draining you?

  3. When it comes to children, what's stronger in you: hope or fear?

What it is

Sometimes periods are just naturally like that. But heavy bleeding is often caused by fibroids, adenomyosis, polyps, endometrial hyperplasia, hormonal imbalances or blood clotting problems.

According to the Russian Ministry of Health clinical guidelines (2024), normal blood loss during one period is 5 to 80 ml. Bleeding that is too heavy, too long or irregular affects about 30% of women of reproductive age, and up to 70% closer to menopause. The Ministry of Health of Kazakhstan clinical protocol (2020) states that up to a third of women experience abnormal uterine bleeding at least once in their lives.

Over time, heavy periods lead to iron deficiency. That's where weakness, shortness of breath and brittle hair and nails come from.

That's why it's worth having a gynecologist check the cause and getting a blood test for hemoglobin and ferritin. The guidelines name ferritin as the main test that shows iron deficiency.

How it shows up

If you soak through several pads in an hour and feel dizzy, see a doctor right away.

A gynecologist looks for the cause, and either they or a general practitioner orders the blood tests.

Frequently asked questions

Can stress cause heavy periods?

A gynecologist looks for the cause: it could be fibroids, polyps, hormonal imbalances or blood clotting problems. Heavy periods often lead to low iron, so a blood test is done too. Psychosomatics looks at where your strength is draining away.
