Why am I scared to name a price for my work?
Fear of naming a price is mostly about self-worth and the phrase “asking for money is improper”, not about arithmetic. It helps to separate the price from yourself as a person: a price describes the work and the result, not your value. Count what you give the client and rehearse one short phrase out loud.
Where this fear comes from
Many of us were taught that a good girl is modest and does not ask for extra. In adult life it sounds like “it is awkward to talk about money” and “what if they refuse, then I am not worth it”.
There is another reason: a low price makes approval easier to get. But you pay for it with tiredness and resentment.
How to name a price calmly
- Write down what the client gets: the result, the time, your experience, the materials. The price rests on that, not on your mood.
- Look at what similar work costs around you. Do not copy the number, just check yourself against it.
- Rehearse one phrase out loud: “It costs this much, here is what is included”. No excuses and no “well, if it is expensive for you”.
- After the price, pause and do not lower it at once. A pause is not awkwardness, it is time for the client to think.
- If a client says no, that is an answer about their budget or need, not about your value.
What to do about guilt
Guilt at the word “price” is normal. It is an old habit and it weakens with every number you name. Start with a small order and raise the price step by step.
If the fear is strong, comes with panic or gets in the way of work, see a specialist in person. It is not weakness.
Where the Ladder fits in
On the Ladder, a goal such as “earn this much” stands at the top, and between you and it are obstacles: words and beliefs about money. The diagnostic shows which of them is most noticeable right now. It takes 10 minutes from your phone and is free.
Frequently asked questions
Why do I feel awkward taking money from friends and acquaintances?
Because friendship and work have got mixed up. State the terms in advance: what it costs, what is included and when payment is due. That is fairer for both of you.
How do I raise my price without losing clients?
Give notice in advance and raise it for new orders. Regular clients can keep the old price for a period you name.
What if I am not experienced yet?
The price depends on the result you give now, not on age or years of work. Start with an honest price for a specific result and review it as you grow.
