How do I stop being afraid of speaking in front of people?
Fear of public speaking is almost never about the text itself. It is about how others see you: “they will judge me”, “they will see I don’t know enough”, “I will look silly”. Practising out loud, a slow exhale before you start and small talks that grow step by step all help. For the fear to fade for good, name whose voice inside you says “don’t embarrass yourself”.
Where this fear comes from
When many people look at you, the body switches on alarm: your heart beats faster, your voice shakes, your thoughts get tangled. This is a normal reaction, not a sign that you can’t speak.
The fear is strongest in those who were shamed for mistakes in front of others as children: at the blackboard, at a family gathering, “don’t embarrass us”. The adult you knows the topic, but inside it is the girl who was laughed at back then who speaks.
What to do before you speak
- Say your talk out loud three times, ideally to one person or into a voice recorder.
- Learn only the first two sentences by heart. The beginning is the scariest part, the rest will follow.
- Write down in one sentence what exactly you are afraid of. A named fear is smaller than a nameless one.
- Before you go out, take five slow exhales, longer than the inhale.
What to do while you speak
- Find one friendly face in the room and talk to that person.
- If you lose your thought, pause and look at your plan. For the audience a pause lasts a second, not forever.
- Mostly it is only you who hears the shake in your voice. Don’t apologise for it, just keep going.
How to weaken the fear for good
Build up gradually: first a voice message to a friend, then a few words at a family dinner, then five minutes at work. Each time your brain gets the experience “I spoke and nothing terrible happened”.
In the Ladder method your goal is at the top, and fears sit above the goal: for example, “if I start speaking, people will see me and talk about me”. The free 10-minute diagnostic shows which fear and whose voice is holding you back. On your phone, no sign-up. The diagnostic is available in English.
Frequently asked questions
Is fear of public speaking a phobia?
Almost everyone feels nervous before speaking. If the fear is so strong that you turn down work, study or important events, it is a reason to see a clinical psychologist or psychotherapist.
What if I get dizzy or my heart pounds hard before speaking?
See a doctor and have your heart and blood pressure checked. If your health is fine, this is an anxiety reaction, and breathing and gradual practice help with it.
Can I speak if I am afraid?
Yes. Courage doesn’t mean having no fear. You go out with the fear, and each time it gets quieter.
Why am I not afraid to talk to a friend, but afraid on stage?
Your friend already accepts you, and you don’t know the audience. Fear switches on where it feels like you will be judged.
