Why am I afraid to show myself on social media and film videos?
Being afraid to be seen is usually not about the camera but about the thought “what will they say, laugh, judge”. It is an old fear of other people’s opinion, and it does not mean you are not good enough. Start small: film a video only for yourself, then show it to one person, and only then go wider.
What is actually frightening
It is rarely the camera itself. What frightens are imagined viewers: classmates, relatives, colleagues who will see it and say “why is she showing off”.
Often behind this are childhood phrases like “don’t stand out” and “what will people think”. Back then they protected you from judgement, and now they get in the way of talking about your work.
How to take the first step
- Write down exactly what you fear: what they will say, how you look, or that you will make a mistake. Each fear has its own way out.
- Film a three-minute video and do not publish it. Just watch it again the next day.
- Show it to one person you trust and ask what was clear and useful.
- Start with the format that feels easier: text, voice, a photo of your hands and workplace.
- Agree rules with yourself: how many posts a week, which topics you do not discuss, how you react to an unpleasant comment.
What to do about criticism
An unpleasant comment does not cancel your work. Ask whether it is a remark about the thing itself or a judgement of you as a person. You can take the first into account and leave the rest without a reply.
If fear of speaking in public gets in the way of life, or comes with panic, sleeplessness or avoiding people, see a specialist in person. It is a common state and you are not alone in it.

Frequently asked questions
Is it normal to be afraid of the camera?
Yes, it is a very common feeling. It says nothing about your talent or ability. It says how much other people’s opinion matters to you.
Do I have to show my face to promote my work?
No. You can start with text, voice, your work and the process. Add your face when you are ready.
How do I stop fearing judgement from people I know?
Decide in advance whose opinion matters. You cannot get approval from everyone you know, and two or three supportive people are enough to begin.
Will the fear pass if I just start?
Usually it gets quieter each time but does not vanish at once. Do not wait for the fear to pass before the first step: the step is what makes it smaller.
