How do I stop being afraid of change in my life?
Fear of change is usually not about the change itself but about what comes after it: what your family will say, whether you will cope, who you will become. You cannot order yourself to stop being afraid, but you can name exactly what you fear and take a trial step you can still come back from. When the fear has a name and the step is small, change stops feeling like a leap into the void.
Why it is scary even when you want it
A familiar life is clear, even when it is hard. The mind picks the familiar because it has already been lived through. The new is still unknown, and your head fills in the worst.
Often there is someone else’s experience behind the fear: a mother who said “don’t look for better when you have good”, or a family story where a move or a divorce ended badly.
Name exactly what you fear
Take the change you are thinking about and answer in writing:
- Finish the sentence “If I do this, then…” several times, until you reach the most unpleasant answer.
- Whose voice is saying this: yours or someone close to you?
- What is the worst that could really happen, and what would you do then?
- What are you paying for everything staying as it is?
Take a step you can come back from
You do not have to quit your job or move right away. Go to an interview, spend a week in another city, talk to someone who has already taken such a step. A trial step gives you experience, and experience calms better than persuasion.
In the Ladder method fears of what comes after the goal stand above the goal itself, and other people’s words stand as obstacles between you and it. The free diagnostic shows in 10 minutes from your phone what holds you in particular.
Frequently asked questions
What if I am afraid even of good changes?
That is common. Even a wanted change takes something away: a familiar role, people around you, an excuse. Look at what you will lose as well as what you will gain.
How do I know this change is really what I need?
If you keep coming back to the thought for months and feel both interest and fear, it is most likely your own wish and not a whim.
When should I see a doctor about fear of change?
If anxiety keeps you from sleeping, you have panic attacks or low mood lasts for weeks, see a doctor, a psychotherapist or a psychiatrist.
