I want to get married, but relationships don’t work out. What is wrong with me?

In short

Nothing is wrong with you: wanting a family is normal, and not having found a relationship yet says nothing about your worth. Often what stands between “I want to get married” and closeness is not circumstances but fears: making a mistake again, losing your freedom, repeating your mother’s life. Start by asking what kind of family you want and what scares you about it, not “when”.

Why “what is wrong with me” doesn’t help

When relatives keep asking “so when?” and friends get married one after another, it is easy to decide the problem is you. That thought adds shame and hurry, but it does not help you choose a partner.

A relationship takes two people and some luck. You can’t control luck, but you can look at what inside you keeps people at a distance.

What often stands between you and closeness

What you can do today

Describe the family you want: not “a good husband”, but how an ordinary evening goes, how you settle arguments, where you are in this picture. Then ask yourself: what scares me here? The answer shows what to work on.

If you have experienced abuse in a relationship, it is not your fault. With that kind of pain it is better to see a clinical psychologist or psychotherapist in person. In Kazakhstan the free helpline 111 is available, and if your life is in danger call 112.

Where the Ladder comes in

In the Ladder method the goal “to build a family” is at the top. Below is the past, between you and the goal are obstacles such as relatives’ words, and above the goal are fears about what happens when you get there. The free diagnostic takes 10 minutes and shows what holds you back. On your phone, no sign-up.

I don’t promise you will meet a husband after the diagnostic. It helps you see what gets in the way inside and decide where to start.

Frequently asked questions

If I am over 35 and not married, is it too late?

No. Relationships can start at any age. Age matters if you are thinking about children: then it is worth a calm talk with a gynaecologist about your health and timing.

How do I answer “when are you getting married?”

A short phrase without excuses is enough: “When it happens, I’ll tell you.” You don’t owe anyone an explanation of your private life.

Maybe I am just too picky?

Knowing what you want is not a flaw. Check something else: are your standards about warmth and respect, or about making sure nobody can ever hurt you?

What if I am not sure I want to get married?

That is an honest answer too. First figure out whether this is your wish or your family’s expectation. The page on how to know what you really want can help.

See what is holding you back.

In 10 minutes, the Ladder shows past events, other people’s words and your fears on one map. You get your own map at the end.
