Psychosomatics of the kidneys and pyelonephritis
A pulling pain in your side near the lower back, a fever, pain when you pee. That’s how a kidney infection often starts, and it can’t be put off.

What psychosomatics says
In psychosomatics, the kidneys and urinary tract are linked to boundaries. Where is my place, where does mine end and someone else’s begin. Pyelonephritis more often points to a situation where your boundaries are crossed and you can’t defend them.
For a woman, her territory is most often her loved ones and her home: husband, children, a friend, the apartment. A partner’s affair, living in someone else’s family where you’re not the woman of the house, a home with no corner of your own. You don’t know where your place is or how to draw the line.
Your most personal territory is your body. Unpleasant exams, intimacy you put up with, or intimacy against your will also cross your boundaries. If that happened to you, it is not your fault. Psychosomatics helps you find where the boundary was crossed and take back your right to say “no.”
What it is
Your kidneys filter blood and make urine. Pyelonephritis is an inflammation of the kidney, most often caused by an infection. The UK’s National Health Service (NHS, 2025) says it often starts with cystitis: bacteria travel up from the bladder.
According to the US National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), kidney infections are more common in women than in men and often happen during pregnancy. Kidney stones, problems with urine flow and a weakened immune system raise the risk.
Without treatment, a kidney infection can become dangerous, up to blood poisoning. It’s treated with antibiotics that a doctor prescribes after a urine test.
Lower back pain isn’t always about the kidneys: muscles and the spine often hurt too. A temperature check, a urine test and an ultrasound help tell the difference.
How it shows up
- High temperature, chills, aches like with the flu
- Pain in the lower back or in your side, under the ribs
- Pain or stinging when you pee
- Needing to pee often and urgently
- Dark or cloudy urine, blood in the urine
- Nausea, vomiting
Start with a general practitioner: they’ll order urine and blood tests. After that, a urologist or a nephrologist will take care of you.
Frequently asked questions
Can pyelonephritis be caused by stress?
Pyelonephritis is caused by an infection, and it’s treated with antibiotics a doctor prescribes. Stress doesn’t replace bacteria. Psychosomatics looks at something else: what was happening with your boundaries when the inflammation started or came back.
What do the kidneys mean in psychosomatics?
The kidneys and urinary tract are linked to boundaries and your own place. An affair, living in someone else’s family, having no corner of your own, intimacy you put up with. If your boundaries were crossed, it is not your fault.
If I’m taking antibiotics, do I need psychosomatics?
Finish the antibiotics exactly as your doctor said, or the infection may come back. Psychosomatics goes alongside: it helps you see where you can’t stand up for yourself. One doesn’t get in the way of the other.
