Psychosomatics of eye twitching (eyelid twitch)
Your eyelid twitches on its own: most often it is harmless and goes away by itself. Doctors list stress, dry eyes, too much caffeine and lack of sleep among the common causes. If it lasts longer than a few weeks, the eyelid closes completely or another part of the face twitches, see an eye doctor. The Ladder method adds questions about what you are holding in tension.

When to see a doctor
Book a doctor’s appointment if you notice:
- The eyelid twitches or flutters without your control
- The twitch comes and goes, most often in one eye
- It happens after a short night, overwork or a lot of coffee
- Eyes feel dry, burn or get tired from screens
- The twitch gets stronger on stressful days
- Rarely: the eyelid closes completely, or the cheek or corner of the mouth twitches
Start with an eye doctor: they will check for dry eye and rule out other causes. If the twitch comes with other symptoms, see a general practitioner or a neurologist.
What medicine knows
An eyelid twitch is blinking or other eyelid movement that you cannot control (National Eye Institute, USA). It usually comes and goes on its own. Superstitions about the right or left eye have nothing to do with medicine.
The National Eye Institute names stress, dry eye, too much caffeine and lack of sleep among the common causes. Sometimes a twitch is part of another condition or a side effect of a medicine, so if it does not go away, a doctor looks for the cause.
What helps is what is good for you anyway: enough sleep, less stress, less coffee, tea and soda. If the cause is dry eye, an eye doctor can recommend eye drops or other treatment (National Eye Institute).
A rare form, benign essential blepharospasm, starts with small twitches that become more frequent and can close the eyes completely, making it hard to read or drive. Women aged 40 to 60 are more likely to develop it. An eye doctor treats it with injections and, if needed, surgery.
In the Ladder method
In the Ladder method an eye twitch is not decoded as a "sign". Medicine names clear causes: stress, lack of sleep, caffeine, dry eyes. We look only at the part that is about you: what in your life is at its limit right now.
An eyelid twitch often comes in a period when you have been bracing for a long time, enduring and keeping a straight face: a project deadline, a conflict, night shifts with a baby. The body seems to let the tension out in the smallest place.
On the ladder this shows up as steps made of overload and unspoken things. You can go through them calmly once you have checked your health. A twitch is not a reason to blame yourself.
These are questions for reflection, not an explanation of what causes the condition and not a treatment.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my eye twitch?
The National Eye Institute names stress, dry eye, too much caffeine and lack of sleep as common causes. Most often the twitch goes away on its own. If it lasts longer than a few weeks, see an eye doctor.
Can an eye twitch be caused by nerves?
Stress is on the list of common causes, but it is not the only one. Check your sleep, your coffee and whether your eyes are dry. If there is a lot of nervous tension in your life, the Ladder method can look at it separately, as an addition to a doctor, not a replacement.
Does the superstition about the right and left eye mean anything?
Superstitions have nothing to do with medicine, they are cultural. If the twitch bothers you or lasts for weeks, the point is not the superstition but the cause that an eye doctor will find.
