How do I let go of resentment toward my mother if it still hurts?
Resentment toward your mother does not go away from “you have to forgive”, it goes away when it is acknowledged. Start by putting into words what exactly hurt back then and what you lacked. Letting go does not mean saying everything was fine: it means you stop waiting for your mother to give what she cannot, and give it to yourself.
Why the resentment lasts for years
Childhood resentment lives not in memory but in the rules you live by now: “no one will praise me”, “I have to earn it”, “my feelings don’t matter”. While the rule works, the resentment rises again in every talk with your mother.
Waiting holds it too. Inside you still hope that one day she will understand and apologise. Each time that does not happen, it hurts again.
What you can do today
- Write a letter to your mother that you will not send. Be specific: what happened, what you felt, what you lacked.
- Find one phrase of your mother’s that still sounds inside you. Write it down and next to it your own adult answer: what you think about it now.
- Separate your mother then from your mother now. You can be angry about the past and still decide what relationship you want today.
- Decide what closeness you want: calling every day, once a week or less. That is your right, not betrayal.
- Ask yourself what you waited for from her, and think how you can give it to yourself: praise, rest, protection.
If there was abuse
If there was abuse in your childhood, none of it is your fault, and no one has the right to demand forgiveness from you. With that kind of pain it is better to see a clinical psychologist or psychotherapist in person. In Kazakhstan the free 24/7 helpline 111 is open, and if there is a threat to life, call 112.

Frequently asked questions
Do I have to talk to my mother about it?
No. Sometimes a talk helps, sometimes it hurts again. Start with work on yourself and leave the talk for later, if you want it.
If I am angry with my mother, am I a bad daughter?
No. Anger at someone who mattered is natural. You can love your mother and be angry about what happened.
What if my mother has passed away?
You can let go of resentment without her. An unsent letter and a talk with someone close or with a specialist help just the same.
