How do I start my life over after a divorce?
First let yourself live through the loss: pain, anger and confusion after a divorce are normal, and there is no need to rush to “be fine”. A divorce doesn’t make you a failure, it is the end of one chapter, not a verdict. When it gets a little easier, start with a small goal just for yourself, not about a new husband and not about proving something to your ex.
What is happening to you now
A divorce is a loss, even if you decided to leave. You lose not only a person but plans, everyday routines, a shared circle of friends. Grieving for this is normal.
Shame often comes on top: “what will my family say”, “I didn’t keep the family together”. These phrases are loud, but they say nothing about who you really are.
The first months: what to lean on
- Your body. Sleep, food, walks. If you can’t sleep or eat for a long time, see a general practitioner.
- People. One or two friends with whom you don’t have to keep up appearances.
- Practical matters. Money, housing, documents, arrangements about the children. The clearer they are, the less anxiety.
- Separately from the children. They need the truth in simple words and the certainty that both parents love them. Your adult feelings are better shared with a friend or a specialist, not with a child.
How to stop blaming yourself
The question “what did I do wrong” seems honest, but it usually turns into an endless trial. A relationship involves two people. It is more useful to ask: what do I now know about myself, and what will I no longer tolerate.
If there was violence in your marriage, it is not your fault. With that kind of pain it is better to see a clinical psychologist or psychotherapist in person. In Kazakhstan the free helpline 111 is available, and if your life is in danger, call 112.
A new goal and where the Ladder fits in
When you have the strength, set a goal for yourself: return to your profession, move, learn what you kept putting off. A goal helps you see that life goes on, and not build it around your ex-husband.
In the Ladder method this goal sits at the top, below is the past, including the marriage, between you and the goal are obstacles, and above are fears about the future. The free diagnostic takes 10 minutes and shows what holds you specifically. On your phone, no sign-up. It doesn’t replace help when the pain is severe, it helps you see where to start.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to recover after a divorce?
There is no set time. For some it is the first months, for others a year or more. If after several months you have no strength to get out of bed and nothing brings joy, that is a reason to see a doctor or a clinical psychologist.
Is it normal that I feel relief rather than sadness?
Yes. If the marriage was hard, relief is natural. Sadness may come later, and that is normal too.
When can I start a new relationship?
When you want closeness, not rescue from loneliness or proof for your ex. There is no need to rush, and no need to forbid yourself either.
How do I stop worrying about what my family will say?
Write down their phrases and note next to each whether you agree with it now. You don’t owe everyone an explanation of your divorce. The page about living up to your parents’ expectations can help.
See what is holding you back.
In 10 minutes, the Ladder shows past events, other people’s words and your fears on one map. You get your own map at the end.
