Why do I feel lonely even when people are around me?

In short

Loneliness among people is almost always about not being seen as you really are: you are with everyone, but you keep your feelings to yourself. Start with one person and one honest sentence about how you actually are. Closeness grows not from the number of people, but from at least one person knowing you as you are.

Where loneliness comes from when people are around

You can spend the whole day caring for your family and working in a team and still never once say what you feel yourself. Then people know your role: mom, wife, employee, the friend who always listens. But nobody knows you.

Often there is fear behind it: “if I show that I am struggling, they will turn away”, “I will be a burden”, “they will judge me”. You close up to protect yourself, and that is exactly what leaves you alone.

Loneliness and solitude are not the same

Solitude is something you choose, and afterwards you feel lighter. Loneliness comes uninvited, and afterwards you feel worse: heavy inside, no energy, wanting to hide even deeper.

How to get out of it step by step

Where the Ladder comes in

In the Ladder method the goal is at the top, obstacles stand between you and the goal, and fears sit above the goal. If your goal is “close people around me”, the free 10-minute diagnostic shows which fear keeps you closed: fear of judgment, fear of being a burden, or fear of being left again. From your phone, no sign-up.

If the sadness lasts more than two weeks, sleep and appetite are gone, or thoughts appear that you do not want to live, see a doctor, a psychiatrist or a psychotherapist. Helpline numbers are on the urgent help page.

Frequently asked questions

Is it normal to feel lonely in a marriage?

It happens often, especially when conversations have shrunk to kids and chores. It is a reason not to endure, but to start talking about yourself: what matters to you, what you are missing. If it does not work between the two of you, a family psychologist helps.

How do I make friends after 30?

Through a shared activity: a course, sport, a hobby club, a parents’ chat where you meet regularly. Friendship grows from repeated meetings, not from one lucky one.

Why do I turn down meetups even though I feel lonely?

Most often from tiredness or fear that it will be awkward. Agree to short meetups: a 30-minute coffee is easier than a whole evening.

Maybe I just do not need anyone?

If you are calm on your own and not suffering, that is fine. But if you feel sad and empty, you do need closeness, and you can build it little by little.

See what is holding you back.

In 10 minutes, the Ladder shows past events, other people’s words and your fears on one map. You get your own map at the end.
